Square Warehouse: A Chic Lounge Bar in Thane, India

Transforming an Old Warehouse into a Stylish Nightspot

Located in Thane, India, Square Warehouse is a remarkable transformation of an old warehouse into a chic lounge bar. The project, led by renowned designer Behzad Kharas, aimed to create a versatile space that functions as a restaurant during the day, a lounge in the evening, and a club at night.

The design team drew inspiration from the existing structure, utilizing the warehouse's height and exposed ceilings to create visual interest. A mezzanine level was introduced to house the VIP and VVIP sections, connected by a bridge that overlooks the main dance floor. The bar, strategically aligned with the dance floor, serves as a highlight element, drawing guests into the space.

One of the key challenges of the project was to ensure acoustic privacy, given the proximity of residential complexes. To address this, the roof and walls were clad with arma sound insulation, and heat insulation panels were added to the roof. An air gap and exposed brickwork further insulated the space from sound leakage. Additionally, sound cutoff lobbies were strategically placed at the entrance and near the kitchen to minimize acoustic leakage.

The design of Square Warehouse is characterized by its use of minimal materials and innovative lighting design. Red bricks were used to create a textured backdrop, while black ceilings with 3D MDF boards concealed insulation and wire details. A black granite chevron pattern was introduced in the rustic copper tiles, adding a touch of luxury to the space. The VIP section features an abstract interplay of shimmering black ACP and copper texture paint, creating a more opulent atmosphere.

The outdoor sheesha terrace was designed as a landscape trellis, providing insulation from the sun's rays during the early evening hours. A water feature wall, cleverly camouflaging the AC machines, generates a soothing sound of water, enhancing the garden-like ambiance.

The Square Warehouse project was not without its challenges. With a tight timeframe of six months, coordinating the efforts of seven designers with different backgrounds was a significant task. Additionally, working in a dark and poorly ventilated environment presented its own set of difficulties. However, the team overcame these obstacles and successfully delivered a space that exceeded expectations.

Square Warehouse has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
